Reading

Reading

  • uses portrait format to read text arranged in columns

  • uses landscape format to read text/pictures not arranged in columns [picture: participant2 (1)]

  • option to show temporarily which line is being read by the user (but it should be as minimalistic as possible)

  • mentioned that he would like to have a slightly longer device to read text which is not arranged in columns

Highlighting

  • uses finger to click on a word -> cursor appears -> drags cursor to the end of the text to be highlighted
  • OR: uses stylus to click on first word of text to be highlighted -> drags stylus to the last word of the highlighted text part [picture: participant2 (2)]

Underlining

  • in the same way as highlighting
  • uses underlining when he reads paper for the first time (for the second time reading he uses highlighting to mark important words of the underlined text)

Making Comments

  • highlights/underlines text part to be annotated -> double clicks on this part -> comment box appears
  • makes annotations with a keyboard
  • comment box should be movable but default position should be outside of the text area
  • rotates display by 90° to have more space for adding annotations [picture: participant2 (3)]
  • if comments are not edited they should be minimized (a small icon could indicate that there is a comment) [picture: participant2 (5)]

Erasing

  • clicks on a "X" symbol to delete comment
  • OR: uses a stylus as an eraser to delete highlights

Searching

  • clicks on a button to start search mode -> types word for search by using a keyboard -> search process starts

  • search results are arranged in a list on the display: each entry shows page number and title of the paragraph

  • user opens corresponding book page number -> uses device to find search result within the page (search results are highlighted)

  • would like to have a symbol/icon (no HALO) in case there are results on the current page which are not within the display's screen

  • user thinks a halo may appear too distracting if too many search results exist on the same page

  • would also like to see the number of search results of the current page

Finding annotated content

  • button to show a list of annotations -> each entry shows page number and title of the paragraph
  • open corresponding page number
  • uses display in landscape format (just one half of the device covers the page) to find annotations
  • while moving the display on the paper, annotations are shown -> comment box is shown on the display's part which does not cover the text
  • shows only one comment completely at the same time (other comments are shown as an icon) - as default the comment which is closest to the middle of the device should be shown completely
  • to see other comments completely the display has to be moved
  • an icon (no halo technique) indicates whether there are more annotations on the same page

Related Content

  • an icon next to an image should indicate that there is related content (such as a video) available
  • if user clicks on this icon, the video starts
  • user can lift up device to watch the video
  • click on reference -> shows title and abstract of the reference

Navigation

  • button to open menu of table of content, index or glossary
  • menu is searchable

Flipping

  • flips display to see halos of nearby annotations
  • OR: flip to change contrast of display (for reading during night)

Stacking

  • to compare annotations of two persons [picture: participant2 (9-11)]

  • there should be a "union function" to see both the annotations of person 1 and person 2

  • there should be an "intersection function" to see highlighting from person 1 and person 2 which appear at the same spot

  • stacking two displays on top of each other (one display being rotated by 90°)

  • -> highlighting/underlining from both displays/users are shown within the overlapping area

  • -> comments are shown within the non overlapping area of the displays (comments from user #1 are shown in the non overlapping part of device #1) [picture: participant2 (13)]

Tilting

  • to see annotations on the whole page [picture: participant2 (7)]

Lifting

  • lifts device above a picture on the paper -> 3D image comes up -> use the display to inspect the 3D image
