- uses portrait format to read text arranged in two columns
- uses landscape format for text not arranged in columns ( but would like to have a slightly longer display)
- show current paragraph (e.g. abstract) and hide/shade rest of the text
- OR: option to show temporarily which line is being read by the user (but it should be as minimalistic as possible)
- method depends on how long the text to be highlighted is:
- for short text part: would use finger or stylus to highlight text line by line
- for long text part: marks first word of text to be highlighted and drags finger or stylus to last word to be highlighted
- OR: touch input: drags finger across line to be highlighted -> drags finger downwards to highlight following lines
- OR: touch input: draws a circle or a line above the text line which should be highlighted
- OR: would use thumb to mark the first line and drag index finger to the last line which should be highlighted (similar to pinch gesture)
- double clicks on highlight or spot within the display -> menu pops up -> chooses comment function
- -> comment box appears below current paragraph (probably comment box and text are rearranged to have more space for the comment box)
- sticky note should be movable, resizable and hideable (if not in use)
- option to choose between stylus or keyboard
- rotates display by 90° to have more space for adding annotations
- if comments are not edited they should be minimized (a small icon could indicate that there is a comment)
- clicks on annotation -> menu pops up -> option to delete annotation appears
- OR: clicks on "X" to delete comments
- moves pen from right to left to erase highlighting/underlining
- OR: uses opposite end of pen to erase highlighting
- OR: drag finger across highlight -> delete option appears
- highlights word -> clicks on word -> menu pops up -> click on search option
- OR: clicks on search button -> types word
- OR: draws a big square -> writes word within square [picture: participant6 (4)]
- -> search process starts -> highlights search results on the paper
- information on bottom of the device to inform user about search results on following/previous pages
- -> (icon appears on the bottom left side if the word appears on a previous page and it appears on the right side when the word is found on the following pages)
- halo technique to show nearby annotations
- OR: symbol/icon (no HALO) in case there are offscreen results on the current page
- would also like to see the number of search results of the current page
- if there is more than one result on the same page -> device tells him that he views the n-Th search result at this page
- functionality to search within page, paragraph or whole document
- search results are arranged in a list on the display: each entry shows page number and title of the paragraph
- clicks on button -> history appears -> shows annotations type + page number
- list is sortable (by type of annotation, location in paper, ...)
- when device is located on a paper -> shows all annotations
- OR: uses display in landscape format (just one half of the device covers the page) to find annotations
- -> while moving the display on the paper -> comment box is shown on the display's part which does not cover the text
- -> shows only one comment completely at the same time (other comments are shown as an icon) - as default the comment which is closest to the middle of the device should be shown completely
- OR: remaining annotations are shown at the right border of the device as a small list (the distance between two annotations depends on their location within the paper)
- uses halo technique
- search within annotations (search by color/type/...)
- clicks on reference -> shows title and year of publication
- clicks on reference to a figure -> shows image on display
- OR: if the display is located above a reference to a figure -> an arrow shows in the direction of the location of the figure
- clicks on image -> finds related videos
- user can lift up device to watch the video
- possibility of interactive pictures (e.g. click on the image to show day and night view of an image)
- clicks on button to see table of content, index or glossary
- menu is searchable
- after selecting a chapter -> corresponding page number + arrow on the left or the right side appears to show if the user has to look for the chapter within the previous or the following pages
- to see the next or the previous page (depends on direction of flipping)
- to expand screen space (e.g. one side for annotation mode and one side for browser)
- to change between working space and shortcuts (such as calculator, browser, weather forecast)
- flips display to see halos of nearby annotations
- to share information (but wouldn't like to share annotations)
- to compare two graphics (data matching)
- to compare annotations of two persons
- there should be a "union function" to see both the annotations of person 1 and person 2
- there should be an "intersection function" to see highlighting from person 1 and person 2 which appear at the same spot
- to expand viewing space
- instead of scrolling could use tilting
- when the display is lifted or tilted -> pdf appears on screen (becomes a tablet)
- to take pictures
- map application:
- when device is on surface -> 2D view of map
- when it is lifted up -> 3D map appears (the more it is lifted up -> the more the 3D effect appears)
- to see annotations on the whole page
- as a magnifying lens
- to take pictures
- would like to have free form annotations to draw circles around words or question marks
- would like to make a copy of the underlying page -> lock it -> move the display around without the physical paper
- function to copy and paste highlighting, underlining
- function to search in Google
- click on word to show meaning, translation, synonyms
- small bookmarks as reminder of annotations on other pages (bookmarks are always visible)
- set an anchor in a book page to a picture -> other users can see this anchor when using the same book
- use for sketching
- problem: how to highlight text over two columns?
