Reading

Reading

  • uses portrait format to read text arranged in two columns
  • uses landscape format for text not arranged in columns ( but would like to have a slightly longer display)

Highlighting

  • method depends on how long the text to be highlighted is:
  • for short text part: would use finger or stylus to highlight text line by line
  • for long text part: marks first word of text to be highlighted and drags finger or stylus to last word to be highlighted

Underlining

  • would do underlining in the same way as highlighting
  • doesn't use it quite often -> prefers highlighting and free form annotations

Making Comments

  • double clicks on highlight or spot within the display -> menu pops up -> chooses comment function
  • -> comment box appears below current paragraph (probably comment box and text are rearranged to have more space for the comment box)
  • would use a keyboard or a pen for handwriting
  • mentioned that the device feels too small to make comments

Erasing

  • clicks on annotation -> menu pops up -> option to delete annotation appears
  • OR: clicks on "X" to delete comments
  • OR: moves pen from right to left to erase highlighting/underlining

Searching

  • highlights word -> clicks on word -> menu pops up -> click on search option

  • OR: clicks on search button -> types word

  • OR: draws a big square -> writes word within square [picture: participant6 (4)]

  • -> search process starts -> highlights search results on the paper

  • on the bottom of device: list with next 5 pages which contain the searched word (+ option to show more than the next 5 pages)

  • no halo technique

Finding Annotated Content

  • clicks on button -> history appears -> shows annotations type + page number
  • list is sortable (default: by type of annotation)
  • when device is located on a paper -> shows all annotations
  • no halo technique

Related content

  • clicks on reference -> shows title and year of publication
  • clicks on reference to a figure -> shows image on display
  • clicks on image -> finds related videos

Navigation

  • clicks on button to see table of content

Flipping

  • to see the next or the previous page (depends on direction of flipping)
  • to expand screen space (e.g. one side for annotation mode and one side for browser)

Stacking

  • to share information (but wouldn't like to share annotations)

Tilting

  • instead of scrolling could use tilting
  • when the display is lifted or tilted -> pdf appears on screen (becomes a tablet)

Lifting

Other Remarks

  • would like to have free form annotations to draw circles around words or question marks
  • would like to make a copy of the underlying page -> lock it -> move the display around without the physical paper
  • is concerned about privacy if the device is lifted (would like to have a black screen on the other side)
