Engineering SOP
Named after the famed physicist credited for atomic science and relativity as we knew it at the time, Einstein Engineering Solutions(Also known as EES) is a major provider for almost every part of a ship or home or colony that exists in the void. Established in 2285 by by the esteemed navy engineer Issac Winters after his service, EES has become a leading brand in safety and efficiency.
EES not only provides power plants, engine parts, gravity generators, air recyclers, fire equipment and phase shields(plus much more!) but also services repairs and maintains them! We contract our our brilliant deckhands and life support experts for both private and state deals where our experts(most likely you!) are always on site to repair or improve our client's components and vessel.
The Compressed Fractal Matter Matrix Engine, also known as the Supermatter is a sole patent owned and distributed by us, Einstein Engineering Solutions. The Supermatter is a very unstable marvel unless in very specific conditions. Under NO circumstances should you touch it, not even soul crypts have been documented as surviving the lethal contact with the Supermatter.
The Supermatter is in short, highly compressed phoronic matter that reacts when energized or contact with an oxygen-enriched environment releasing energy in the form of heat and radiation as well as phoron and oxygen. This heat and radiation is most often utilized by radiation collection panels or thermal turbine generators. For this reason the Supermatter must remain in a sealed environment with a gas loop that can vent the excessive heat and filter the unwanted gasses. Much like a fire, the Supermatter is most dangerous when a chain reaction starts from excessive heat buildup.
In the event of a runaway reaction:
- First, establish the cause of the issue, it might be a breach of containment/the loops or the cooling loop has insufficient gas pressure to vent the heat.
- If it is a containment issue, see below Ejecting the Supermatter, otherwise continue these steps: Connect more coolant gas to the cooling loop, if this does not control the reaction - look for a bypass valve named 'emergency bypass valve'. This will connect the cooling and containment loops to balance out the pressure and heat.
- If this does not help and the Supermatter is still reacting out of control and becoming unstable, your next step is to find the containment shutters button, followed by the ejection toggle. You MUST make sure the blast door leading to the void is open before ejecting the Supermatter, otherwise your vessel will be in unavoidable trouble.
So long there have been hulls, they've been breached and brave engineers to fix them. Hull breaches pose a serious threat to all life aboard a vessel or habitat for obviuos reasons. If your site suffers a breach your priorities are in this order:
- Your own safety
- The integrity of the site
- The lives of other personnel
While it may seem callous, vacuum exposure is a quick killer where one is expected to self rescue if possible. Your own safety comes above the site as you cannot repair it if injured or dead. When the breach, or breaches are repaired can you solve all the other problems such as the loss of pressure or casualties.
Most shield generators by design today operate at a high power draw and take up at least 30% of a ship or habitat's grid needs. While a heavy energy price this has vastly improved both structure and personal security. Shield generators should at all times have the following settings enabled
- Hyperkinetic Objection Protection: This will prevent asteroids from causing damage
- Hull Shielding: This makes the shield stay flush to the vessel or habitat
- Multi-Dimensional Field Warp: So more than one deck is protected
- Atmospheric Containment: While more of a suggestion, this setting won't allow pressure to escape in event of breach.
Other standard settings should also be familiarized, while more settings draw more power, they all have their unique uses.
Gravity generators are a vital component to most habitats as long-term life in microgravity leads to health complications. However gravity generators themselves pose a unique set of challenges, both posing a major radioactivity hazard and prone to drawing in debris and asteroids. If Gravity generation must be suspended it's vital to be done in PPE that is rated to protect from ray-based emissions up to gamma spectrum. This protection is also required when enabling gravity.
Fires pose a unique risk to void-bound habitats and vessels. Unlike a traditional fire that's contained then attacked. Fires aboard pressured structures should be contained and then ventilated. Most often fires in pressurized spaces burn too hot and flash over too quickly to handle directly with pressure suits or turnout gear - It's far easier to remove windows or structure at the seat of the fire rooms and let vacuum do the rest. If the seat of the fire is too far from the outside the next resort is to use the atmospherics system to siphon the hot air and gasses. However this poses the risk of heating the entire life support system.
As a standard part of EES contracts, on-site engineers are permitted limited right to modify their work site how they see fit for comfort and efficiency. Their work departments(I.E. Engine room, gravity generator room, life support room, etc) have no restrictions on structural modification. Areas outside of this are subject to permission of the relevant department, or in the cases of public use areas(Lobbies, dorms, maintenance areas) common courtesy and sense.
At the time of writing this, the BSD aboard the Northern Light has still not been found. While it functions on an automated 36 hour schedule and can be activated manually. The mystery remains of just where it is housed. While EES contractors are encouraged to try and find the component ship, current policy about it's location is a simple "it's classified" citing security reasons to prevent sabotage. The command council is still offering a large sum to EES if it is found. They found it, it just showed up one day in Bridge Maint like it was there all along. Lots of conflicting accounts of it coming from those who were there still. For now Command's dropped the secret location lie while they unfuck this.
This ship makes no sense, the blueprints we were given don't match this ship at all and it's a design nightmare - as if a hulk slapped together from multiple vessels with no safety oversight, there is no physical place that drive could be hiding... Unless you want to look down those 'forgotten maintenance' tunnels like a fool.
