Research and Development SOP
For two hundred years, Nanotrasen Medical Technology has been a loyal provider of cutting edge medicines, equipment, cybernetics, and biomodification to the galaxy's hospitals and infirm, all at fair prices. From our humble start as a small set of clinics, to our breakthrough discoveries in the element Phoron, to now. Nanotrasen prides itself on it's contributions to the galaxy as not only a provider, but a part of it.
However, none of this would be possible without the work of thousands of dedicated doctors and researchers like you in the medical fields, cyberbionics, xenocryptology, materials science, applied nanotechnology, and everything else in between. At Nanotrasen you serve the galactic species with your brillance and make it a brighter place.
It goes without saying all designs, schematics, blueprints, prototypes and test results are the intellectual property(IP) of Nanotrasen Medical Tech. Misplacement, sale or sabotage of any Nanotrasen research will result in immediate dismissal and legal action.
In the case of live testing of prototype drugs, genetic splices, devices, cybernetics or otherwise to outside contractors, the prototype should be leased to the tester for a modest fee within the market range of the prototype's design or traded for materials or something of equal/greater value. The tester must also be informed of Nanotrasen's mandatory IP rights reserved with a signature to confirm their understanding. The tester must also be aware that they are infact testing a prototype device or drug and must return to you with feedback data and that they do not in fact own the prototype, or may not redistribute or sell it.
While many drugs and devices and cybernetics are not allowed in Nanotrasen facilities or in employee possession(See your Nanotrasen Employee Handbook), the study of such contraband is allowed in lab environments pending an approved CR-124 form from your supervisor. Contraband articles and their research should not leave the lab unless for transport or live testing.
With the rapid expansion of human colonization, the market and field for xenobiology has only grown. Already many Nanotrasen products and patents are based off safely tested and studied life found on other worlds. It is however a science about unknown life, and as we discover and harness new finds safety protocols will be updated.
- Make sure never to touch an undocumented creature or plant with bare skin contact.
- Have at least, preferably two research or security staff with you when studying undocumented life forms.
- Keep undocumented life forms isolated by whatever means would logically contain them.
- Have a pre-planned method of rapid containment or escape should isolation fail.
- (UPDATED) Under NO circumstances is research staff to allow an undocumented lifeform to enter a body cavity, even if it asks nicely.
Phoron, alongside the soul crypt has been a corner stone in Nanotrasen's massive success over the past few decades. Phoron is a highly stable, toxic and mutagenic element that can exist in solid, liquid or gas form with a flashpoint of 80 degrees Celsius. Phoron, named after the astrogeologist who had discovered it - Doctor James Phorsey is number 152 on the Periodic table with an atomic number of 152, and an atomic weight of 262. Phoron is an uncommon natural element that's only found in small satellites. Phoron however is very reactive under certain chemical conditions leading to it's use in many industrial and pharmaceutical applications.
Raw Phoron in any form is very dangerous to the skin, eyes, hair or ingested and can contaminate clothes not suitably thick enough, phoron also has a very low flashpoint and can ignite in the air with as little as 5 PPM(Parts per million). Whenever handling phoron always make sure to wear PPE and double check it's containment methods(beaker lids, canister seals) to prevent undue contamination.

Welcome to your new posting aboard the Northern Light, no doubt you've been briefed just about it's origins, or more accurately; lack of origin. Just what this expedition is about is your company secret to keep as we've made it possible for this vessel to even be able to launch or have the money for so many contractors. While your role is to design prototypes with our untested AI-assisted schematics algorithm and secure xenobiological samples, that's much more of a distraction than the real focus - this ship's secrets.
We've narrowed down our focus of the most anomalous incidents and articles that we want you and your team to look into. Firstly the roaches and spiders. They're unlike anything we've seen and their genetic sequences are for lack of a better word 'locked', unable to even be examined as if by design. Whatever you and the medical branch here can learn will be invaluable.
Secondly, the anomalous artifacts that turn up. They're held to no pattern or motif, only that they have minor anomalous properties or give a tangible sense of unease. You're free to buy or trade these off other contractors - or even study their effects on living beings. However their nature should not be revealed to the crew at large.
Thirdly, the 'Deep Maints' as they're known. They defy all explanation and hold secrets of just how they work if only we can get research staff down there long enough. You're encouraged to tag along with other contractors who find these and only want to loot them selfishly - infact it might save you having to hire a security detail. However if you find anything of value that might explain these anomalies you have full right to secure it by any means that isn't outright violence. We suggest bribery.
Finally, and most importantly - The Bluespace Drive. We've never found it in the aft of the ship despite there being a functioning gravity generator and place for a reactor engine. While the drive can be activated manually or set to an interval timer... It's lack of location is a major theory it might be responsible for the ship's nature. For now command and Einstein Engines are to tell anyone curious the drive's location is classified to prevent sabotage.

We found it, or rather most of the general crew found it within the stable parts of the vessel, while it had only shown itself for a few hours and those present have been claiming the Drive, or ship itself is sentient and sapient. This changes almost all of our present hypothosii about the nature of both the Drive and Light. Due to the unexpected discovery Command has dropped the story of the classified BSD's location and the real reason for our expedition. We're waiting for another opportunity like this while hopefully keeping it out of our UTSM """Escort's""" awareness.
