Generate secure passwords from the main KeeFox button

The KeePass password generator (Tools / Password generator) is a powerful way to easily create secure passwords for any requirements. KeeFox provides a short cut to generate a new password straight from Firefox so that you can easily copy a new password into your clipboard whenever signing up for a new website or service. You can then paste the password into the appropriate form field.

Simply click on the "Generate new password" button on the KeeFox main panel. You can also use the right-click context menu or the Ctrl-Shift-4 keyboard shortcut if you prefer.

KeeFox will ask KeePass to generate a password with the most recently used password generation "profile". You can then optionally request a specific profile to be used instead (which will then become the most recently used profile).

A password "profile" remembers settings for things like the number of characters in the password and the types of character that can be used. You might want to create multiple profiles so that you can quickly generate passwords for high security websites as well as those which place limits on the characters you can use or the maximum length of password.

It can be tempting to paste the new password somewhere temporarily while signing up to a new service but for better security you should try to avoid doing that. If you do paste it somewhere, beware of putting it into convenient spaces such as the Firefox search bar because this will result in the password being sent unencrypted over the internet as part of a search "autocomplete" request.

Note: this tip has been updated for KeeFox 1.5 so may not make complete sense in earlier versions

OLD INFORMATION

The information in this Wiki is out of date.

It is only of interest if you are using the old add-on called KeeFox in a very old (insecure) version of Firefox or other browsers based on the old Firefox XUL technology.

Read the manual for Kee and KeeBird instead.
