en | Tips | Use Unique Passwords

Even well known websites have their data stolen occasionally; protect yourself by using different passwords for every website you visit.

You might have heard this before: "You should use a different password for every service you sign up for."

Maybe that's not news to you but can you honestly say that you actually follow the advice yet? I know that before I used a password manager I certainly couldn't keep track of dozens of different passwords; I now have many hundreds to keep track of and can't imagine how I could remember that many unique passwords without KeeFox to help me out.

You might also have heard of some of the recent password thefts like the 77 million that were taken from Sony in 2011. Maybe that particular incident didn't affect you but unfortunately it is likely that everyone will eventually have at least one password stolen from a website they use; wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to rush around trying to change dozens or hundreds of passwords at many different websites in a race against the criminals that now have your password? If you agree, you should consider changing your existing passwords to ensure they are all unique.

The great thing about KeeFox is that you no longer need to remember the passwords for individual services so it is finally possible to have unique passwords whether you have 10 passwords or 1000.

OLD INFORMATION

The information in this Wiki is out of date.

It is only of interest if you are using the old add-on called KeeFox in a very old (insecure) version of Firefox or other browsers based on the old Firefox XUL technology.

Read the manual for Kee and KeeBird instead.
